Discover Our History
Welcome to the heart of Rockhampton’s history. The Rockhampton and District Historical Society is a testament to our enduring commitment to the past, and we’re here to invite you on an exploration of our rich heritage.
Our Story
The Rockhampton & District Historical Society is a passionate non-profit organisation dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich history and heritage of the Rockhampton region. Established in May of 1948, we’ve been steadfastly committed to the research, collection, preservation, and promotion of Rockhampton’s historical legacy.
Nestled within the iconic Borough Chambers, an architectural gem dating back to 1885, we are proud to call this historic landmark our home. As one of the oldest surviving public buildings in the city, the heritage listed former town hall adds a sense of timelessness to our mission. We open our doors to the public, offering a wide range of educational and research services, as well as providing a captivating museum and a well-stocked library.
Our Collections
Explore the captivating tapestry of the Rockhampton region’s history through our diverse collection of artefacts and memorabilia, all carefully curated and displayed in our museum. Our collections feature a wealth of historical treasures, including:
- Photographs: Visual windows into the past, capturing the essence of bygone eras.
- Documents: A treasure trove of historical records, documents, and maps, revealing the stories of our region.
- Paintings: Artistic expressions of our history, portraying moments in time.
- Interactive Displays: Step into history through interactive exhibits, such as replicas of the original Rockhampton Town Hall, the first Rockhampton Post Office, and a 19th-century Rockhampton street.
Our library is a treasure trove of knowledge, housing a vast collection of books, journals, newspapers, and publications focused on the history of the Rockhampton region. Among our rare and unique documents are original letters, diaries, and maps, offering an intimate glimpse into the past.
